Forbes Under 30 Summit China Breaks Records in Suzhou

The 2019 edition of the Forbes Under 30 Summit China wrapped up in the eastern Chinese city of Suzhou on Oct. 26, attracting a record 650 attendees. The event celebrated this year’s Forbes China 30 Under 30 list, which recognized 600 honorees under the age of 30 in fields from business to science.  Forbes China’s 30 Under 30 list highlights 30 individuals in 20 different fields. The 2019 list has attracted more than half a billion social media views in China since its publication on Oct. 17.

Summit attendees were treated to business insights from more than 20 speakers and panelists from China and around the world. Some 100 expert judges participated in list selection this year, and nearly a quarter of the group were on hand to network, join discussions and present awards. In addition to listees and judges, attendees notably included representatives from Suzhou’s Xiangcheng district government – Forbes China’s event partner, Forbes China executives, past Forbes China 30 Under 30 honorees, and other business leaders. Celebrity members from the 2019 Forbes China 30 Under 30 list also performed onstage, adding excitement.

Among Forbes China speakers, CEO Sherman Lee noted that Forbes Media publishes 30 Under 30 lists around the world and, through those compilations, aims to encourages young entrepreneurs to innovate and succeed. He encouraged 2019 Forbes China 30 Under 30 honorees to strive for excellence and embrace responsibility and discipline. Editor-in-Chief Russell Flannery emphasized fairness in the selection process, thanked all of the judges that supported the 2019 list, and recalled his long experience leading the team that compiles the Forbes China Rich List.  Based on that experience, Flannery predicted many far-sighted members of the 2019 Forbes China 30 Under 30 list on hand in Suzhou would “almost certainly” ascend to the Forbes China Rich List in the future. Former Forbes Russia publisher and current Forbes Kazakhstan consultant Natalia Gandurin delivered a keynote speech that encouraged youth entrepreneurism. Randall Lane, chief content officer and 30 Under 30 list founder at Forbes Media, as well as Forbes Media Executive Vice President Moira Forbes, gave well wishes to the summit via video messages.

Among 2019 Forbes China 30 Under 30 list judges on hand, Simon Collins, CEO and founder of WeDesign.org and former dean of the fashion school at the New York-based Parsons, delivered a keynote speech titled “How to Build a Global Brand.” Success in business requires a designer’s mindset and consideration of sustainable development during problem-solving, Collins said. At the same time, one must think globally in order to create value for others, he said.

Another 2019 Forbes China 30 Under 30 judge, James Chou, the Shanghai-based CEO and managing director of Microsoft for Startups, recalled what sparked his interest in investing earlier in his career and shared how he evaluates businesses. Wang Gang introduced Envision Capital, where he is the founding managing partner, and suggested that young entrepreneurs in China continue to have a lot of opportunities in the technology, consumer good and health sectors.

Among other speakers, Wei De Jun, managing director of investment at China International Capital Corporation, one of China’s largest investment banks, spoke on:  “Investment Assists Rapid Business Growth.” He stated that capital markets provide money for many business development needs, and suggested how entrepreneurs today can access both domestic and global capital markets.

This year’s summit also included roundtable dialogues, innovation pitches and sharing sessions. The first panel discussion, “Show Me Your Potential,” was moderated by Flannery and featured Chou and Wang, as well as Alan Chan, the general manager of investment development at Henderson (China) Investment, Xia Yan, research director of Momenta, an autonomous driving company from China which aims to build the ‘brains’ for autonomous vehicles, and Wan Li, president of Jiangsu Difeida Electronic and vice president of Xiangcheng Youth Chamber of Commerce.

This was followed by the sharing sessions. The first session consisted of Under 30 panelists, Ren Jing, a 2017 Forbes China 30 Under 30 List honoree and CEO of Douxing; Jessica Song, 2018 30 Under 30 Art & Fashion List honoree and CEO of Totrend Investment Group, an investment company; Bi Ran, a 2019 30 Under 30 Education List honoree and CEO of New Dimensions Academy; and Zhang Hanfeng, a 2019 30 Under 30 Travel List honoree and general manager for investment at Suzhou Hi-Tech Tourism Group.

The second session consisted of representatives from top VC firms. Forbes China Technology Editor Carrie Gan moderated the panel, which brought together Roger Wu, Partner of Maison Capital, YT Choi, Managing Partner of HB Ventures, Harry Hui, Managing Partner of Clearvue Partner, and George Gu, Senior Partner of  investment firm Cybernaut.

In the evening, a gala dinner was held for the 2019 Forbes China 30 Under 30 honorees. In an address, Sherman Lee, executive director of Forbes Global Media Holding as well as Forbes China CEO, thanked the guests for attending. Some 20 list judges then presented trophies to more than 200 honorees on hand, encouraging them to bring forth new ideas and persevere in their entrepreneurial ambitions.  Flannery, who is Forbes Global Media Holding Chief China Advisor as well as editor-in-chief at Forbes China, also presented awards.
